Research objectives

There are 5 general research objectives - in general, and more specifically on the processes - can seek . they are
1. description
Two . explanation
Three . prognosis
April . control
May . modeling
These objectives are not completely independent of each other , for the explanation of a phenomenon is partly based on his description , his prognosis requires a detailed explanation, and so on. But researchers can focus on one aspect or another . Most importantly, the objective will affect the tools and techniques used for the analysis.

The two most frequent targets are the description and explanation. The description is often an exploratory phase with graphical representations and statistical measures are not deductive , while the explanation is precise hypotheses to be confronted and employs inferential statistics .
Modeling is the last , the broader objective requires that descriptive and explanatory phases brought sufficient information and knowledge about the system, so that the construction of a model that includes synthetically the different variables in a consistent and parsimonious .
The control is a goal rarely found in psychological research ( as it brings important ethical considerations ) , and the forecast is a bit more frequent. We will address these two objectives in this paper.
What are the characteristics of the research you would like to have funded
There are many transport research programs , each with the focus and characteristics. To enhance your chances of success to be funded , this chapter is intended to help you consider the characteristics of the research account you would like to see funded. Characteristics of research are important for two reasons: 1 ) to help you identify research programs are the best option for your state of research, and 2 ) treatment clearly these characteristics in your state of research increases the likelihood of selection . The important features to consider when writing a statement of research include geographical relevance , transport mode or theme , the financing, the urgency , the kind of research that is needed, and collaboration and cost sharing interests .

GEOGRAPHIC SIGNIFICANCE

How extensive is the problem you are trying to solve? Does experience in countries around the world (ie , intersection design issues or problems of air quality) ? It is strictly a problem in the United States (ie , how to meet U.S. DOT requirements planning ) ? Is it shared by a region or multiple organizations (eg thaw problems or design in earthquake zones ) ? Or is it an even more specific problem that exists only in a small number of places (ie specific species or geology ) ?
Geographical affect the programs that you file your research , and also affect the data to be included in the statement. National research programs such as the National Cooperative Highway Research , focus on research states that address the problems experienced in most states . However, a statement of research focused on a more localized problem in explaining how the product of the research could benefit a national audience can succeed.

MODE OF TRANSPORT OR TOPIC

If your research focuses on a specific mode of transport, its decision on the funding source can be simplified , since many research programs focus on these modes . If , however , the need for research focusing on politics, administration , or other non-modal transportation problems , the right program can be less clear . In this case , contact the personal potential research programs may be necessary.
In addition , some research programs financed only certain topics. Examples include materials hazardous Cooperative Research Program and the National Transport Cooperative Research .
necessary funding
Research programs vary widely in the maximum amount of money provided for each project. It is important to understand the level funding patterns and limitations of a research program to consider a research presentation statement . The proposal for a $ 400,000 for a program that funds projects of $ 100,000 or less are not going to get his tax -funded research .

URGENT

Research programs vary in their time frame for delivery. Find a research program that matches the urgency of the state of research is essential. In some programs , it may take up to 3 years from the filing of a statement of research published a research report . Other programs address the needs that can be met within 6 months.

TYPE OF RESEARCH NEEDED

The term research is used very broadly in this website , as the work done in the interest of promoting the profession of transport through a series of activities. A more formal definition and classification of research transportation is provided in Appendix A. Transportation Research can be as important as materials for transport infrastructure as detailed as testing or statistical analysis of large data sets to identify the public's response to rising gas prices . Applied research exists somewhere in the middle of the spectrum , using fundamental research to solve transportation problems .

PARTNERSHIP / OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE COSTS

Some programs require cost sharing or home game . The selection of your project may require that your state of research includes information on where additional funding is available . For other research programs , may not be required cost sharing , but could improve the project's chances for success.
