English Translation Skills
Translation is an art, and like all other arts , it is difficult to master, as it seeks to convey the exact meaning of what is expressed in one language to another . His own nature , therefore , requires a deep knowledge of both languages in question - a request not easily met . Knowledge is intended here to mean the ability to understand and express. We must first be able to understand exactly what is intended to be carried , and then to express the same thought in another language . So the whole art of translation is to express accurately and precisely without any thought of the original passage omitting or adding any unnecessary or superfluous thought to it, the sense and meaning of vernacular passage in simple, idiomatic English .Some important tips :
Carefully study the following:( 1) First read the passage carefully vernacular , marking all the words or phrases that are not clearly understood. Remember that words have a fixed meaning . They have more than one meaning, and you have to know exactly the meaning intended by the writer. Then and only then will you be able to translate accurately into English writer's main thought contained in the passage vernacular .
( 2) Now is able to translate the vernacular passage in English. In the translation of trying to express the full meaning of the passage in English vernacular , using exact English equivalents vernacular words , phrases and idioms .
(3) However, avoiding the literal translation . You are never forced to give a word for word translation . If you do, you will not be able to convey exactly the meaning and intent of the writer. Do not think or speak in words : what we think and speak in sentences. Translate a sentence as a whole, do not translate words.
(4 ) But if too literal translation is to be avoided at the same time you should guard yourself against a too free a translation too free translation sometimes lacks the essential idea without which the entire translation seems absurd .
( 5) Do not use any unknown words or archaic . Choose only words you know well . The use of big words , and sounding foreign words and terms is not in any way add to the beauty of the translation.
(6 ) Try to avoid the use of many words in a word , correctly chosen , is sufficient . All the art of translation lies in the careful choice of the exact words.
(7 ) If a statement is inconveniently long or has a construction in question, divide it in your mind , in three or four short sentences , and then translate them into English , but see that in doing so , it was slaughtered or maimed meaning the original .
( 8) Finally , to see that its English translation reads like one continuous piece of prose, written in simple , idiomatic English . Should be given exactly the same impression that the passage vernacular .
Test of a good translation
What are the tests of a good translation? His translation is a success if :1. This is a faithful translation of the original in English .
2 . It conveys exactly the meaning and significance of the original.
3 . Plays every detail, omitting nothing .
4 . It's a whole translation .
5 . It is a continuous piece of good English .
6 . Their overall impression is the same as the original.
